The Ritual
(A Short Story)

It happened at one of the five-star hotels, Marriott I think, the fancy one in Juhu. Thank heavens it wasn’t at his home.

The room was cavernous and daunting, with creepy shadows all over created by the hidden lighting everyone is so crazy about nowadays. I was led in by two of my new husband’s giggly cousins. I’d have loved to smack their pretty faces, but that’d have invited a huge ruckus. Besides, I was preoccupied.

I was terrified. Terrified of doing it with someone I didn’t know anything about. What little I did know could be googled on the web. But then, was my lot different from most other women? Examples were all around me— my mom, my aunts, cousins, and friends.

Maybe it was because everything had happened so fast; because I had no clue of the future; because the ghost of Rohan still clung to me like my own shadow. Because. Because. Because…

The elaborately made up bed; the cloying scent of jasmine; the milk on the nightstand—it all sent me into a state of panic.

I felt sick.

We Indians talk so much about sanskars and morality and then a single ritual authorizes sex between perfect strangers. Madness!

I was desperate to make a run for it. But my Indianness— my culture—held me back. The scenes from the aftermath played in my mind. People searching all over for me. The terrible shame. I didn’t really care. But my parents would. Besides, where would I go? No lover was waiting for me with open arms.

It was depressing, but not worth dwelling on. I was, am a practical woman.

I spied my overnight bag set discreetly in a corner. Someone had been thoughtful enough to bring it in for me. I yanked at my jewelry, not caring when it caught on the fabric of my neon pink brocade saree. I quickly changed into the new red silk nightie I had bought on an impulse a couple of weeks ago. I don’t know what had prompted me to do so. It all seemed so silly now. The fine fabric felt cool on my skin.

I took the left side of the bed as it was closest to the window. That would give me something to stare at while…I couldn’t bring myself to think about what would happen next.

I lay down and was almost immediately seized by a violent shiver. Even my teeth chattered.

I tugged the cotton sheet loose and wrapped it snugly around myself and tucked it under my feet. Then I pulled the subtly perfumed heavy patchwork quilt on top. Maybe it was the weight or the warmth, but it helped me calm down.

I was about to drift off to sleep when I heard the door click open behind me, followed by the sound of creaky, new leather sandals. The muffled sound of running water in the bathroom was almost drowned out by my pulse banging in my head. I held my breath, waiting, hoping for a miracle. They say if you wish really hard for something you can make it happen.

I got the shock of my life when the bed sank under his weight. He slipped his arm around me. It was icy cold. I wrapped mine tight across my chest as he spooned my entire length with his body and nuzzled into my neck.

I squeezed my legs together and closed my eyes. His breath smelled extra minty. He was trying too hard.

“Are you asleep?”

“No,” I said quietly.

His thing rubbed into my backside. I had felt one before. In the local bus, as a schoolgirl; as a teenager and a young adult, victimized by the random sexual predator. I wanted to throw up. Instead, I tried to squeeze myself tighter and sink inside.

He tried to roll me over.

I couldn’t take it anymore. “Please Suraj! I don’t think I’m ready yet.”

It’s fair to say he didn’t force himself on me. For that, I was grateful.

She Knew Her New Life Would Not Be Easy,
But Nothing Could Prepare Her For What Waits Ahead

Having returned to Chicago, young socialite Anna Nicholson can't seem to focus on her upcoming marriage. The new information she's learned about her birth mother continues to pull at her, and she hires Pinkerton detectives to help her discover the whole truth.

But as she meets people who once knew her mother and hears stories about the past, Anna soon discovers that some secrets are better left hidden. With pressure mounting to keep the past quiet, she discovers daily that her choice to seek God's purpose for her life isn't as simple as she had hoped.

When things are at their darkest, Anna knows she can turn to her grandmother, Geesje de Jonge, back in Holland, Michigan. Geesje's been helping new Dutch immigrants--including a teen with a troubled history--adjust to America. She only hopes that her wisdom can help all these young people through the turmoil they face.

Praise for the Book
"Varying points of view, well-placed clues, and an interesting subplot about Anna's grandmother welcoming Dutch immigrants to Michigan keeps the story interesting. Austin skillfully embeds her strong spiritual message into the actions of her characters, creating a wonderful historical tale that is naturally inspirational."--Publishers Weekly starred review

Excerpt:
“I’m hoping that the detectives have information about who my real father is.”
Mother purses her lips as if it will help hold her anger inside. When she finally speaks she sounds calm, but I know she’s not. “Isn’t it enough to know your mother’s story and how she died? You need to leave the rest of it alone, Anna, and get on with your life.”
“But I’m curious about my father, too. If he really is Jack Newell, I would like to know what happened to him and why I don’t remember him at all.”
“You may learn something very unsavory. It’s a stone best left unturned.”
“I can’t leave it. I want to know.”
“Listen to me.” She grips my arm again and hushes her voice as if she doesn’t want anyone to overhear, even though the only person near enough is our driver—and he would never tell family secrets, would he? “It’s entirely possible that your parents never married, Anna. If that turns out to be true, we would be obligated to make William and his family aware of it.”
“Of course I’ll tell William. He’s going to be my husband. He’ll want to know who I really am as much as I do.”
“That isn’t true. You are the only one who is obsessed with this. William and his family would prefer not to know.”
I stare at her in surprise. “Did they tell you that? William never mentioned it to me.”
“His mother let me know in a very delicate way that they would be happier not to have the past exhumed. Most of Chicago society has no idea you’re even adopted, let alone what your background is, because frankly, it’s none of their business. William’s mother and I both feel that the past should remain buried. As William’s wife, you must be above reproach. We cannot allow any unsavory details about your parents to taint your reputation.”
“I promise that no one outside our family will ever know what I discover. But I have to keep searching until I learn the truth.”
“Once it’s out of the box, the truth can rarely be concealed. The harder one tries to hide it, the juicier the gossip becomes.”

Two Women Search for Answers Along the Shores of Lake Michigan

As she writes them down for the Semi-Centennial anniversary of the town's settlement, her story takes on a life of its own as she honestly and painfully recalls her regrets, doubts, hardships, and joys. Her story captivates Derk, who sees similarities between Geesje and Anna, and wishes to bring the two together.

Past and present collide as Anna and Geesje seek clarity, but neither expects the revelations that await them.

Excerpt:

Annalisse set her purse down into the flipped over cushions on the couch, repositioned them, and stepped through what used to be neat stacks, years of gallery research. A groan passed her lips when she walked to the desk marred with new scratches, bereft of her monitor and tower hard drive. She looked around the room for her laptop; it, too, was missing.

Cursing under her breath, she saw her prized possession, a two-foot bronze statue of a shepherdess with a pair of sheep grazing near her feet, lying on its side next to a toppled plant stand. An expensive work of art from Florence she’d had no business buying, but she couldn’t resist. When Generosa had called from Italy describing it, Annalisse had to have it. Everyone who knew her well understood her love for sheep. Even if she’d declined Generosa’s offer to bring it back for her, she’d felt certain the bronze would end up in her hands eventually.

Alec waited by the stairs and whispered, “Your bedroom up there?” He pointed upstairs.

She nodded, lifted the mahogany stand upright and, with both hands, replaced the hefty bronze to its rightful place next to the desk.

“Stay downstairs. You’ll be safer. I won’t be long, and I’ll look for your cat.” Alec hit the first step.

“Be careful.”

Whoever destroyed her home had acted with malice. They had her personal data and internet search history, where she shopped online, email correspondence as well as business contacts. A privacy breach she couldn’t afford. Compiling a list of possible suspects in her head, she felt so violated, even more so than by what had happened with Peter. Names and faces blurred together. With fingertips pressed at her temples, she willed the jackhammers in her head to stop.

Raising her arms, as if a make-believe thief told her to, she said, “I give up. I may as well set a match to this place, for all the good it’s going to do me now.”

Alec uttered a sentence upstairs she couldn’t make out.

“Alec, did you find Boris?”

The sound of shuffling filtered downstairs then a thump.

“Alec, what fell?” She looked up at an empty landing.

The unnatural silence pricked the hairs straight out on her neck. “Answer me.”

A mechanical voice broke the silence. “Don’t move.”

She stopped breathing and froze, afraid to look up, but then looked anyway.

A figure in a brownish ski mask and desert camouflage occupied the top of the staircase. Holding Alec. He—or she— held him at gunpoint. One arm cradled Alec’s waist and a black pistol so close to Alec’s right ear, his curls hid part of the barrel.

She’d expected Alec’s expression to be as wild as hers must have been, but he appeared strangely calm.

“I’m all right, Annalisse.”

“Shut up.” The voice was distorted with some kind of voice altering mechanism. Deep tones, similar to a bumblebee in distress.

Author Spotlight Featuring Lisa Potocar And Her New Novel ~ Train To Glory.

It really is a huge pleasure to have Lisa Potocar return with the sequel to her
incredible novel Sweet Glory.
And even though this is set during the Civil War, Train to Glory is timely.
Read on and you'll see what I mean.

A big bear hug to Leslie Ann for hosting me on her My Story, My Way ~ An Indie Adventure!

I’m beyond thrilled to be here and to FINALLY have Train to Glory out there, chugging—rather I hope soon to be traveling faster than the speed of a bullet—through the world! Anyhoo, I might be forgetful, but I can never be accused of not listening. And so, before I forgot (snicker, snort), I wrote this historical novel for the majority of readers who suggested a sequel to my first book, Sweet Glory! To boot, they got their wish of Jana’s reunion with her family for the opening scenes.

I wish I could’ve gotten this story to fans sooner, but I never anticipated writing a sequel, and I had already switched gears to another project when I had to make a one-hundred-and-eighty-degree turn to whip up a plot that could respectably follow Sweet Glory’s. This took some time to iron out, followed by the hefty research and travel required to reconstruct the many historical places featured in Train to Glory, not to mention the writing, editing, and production involved. And, of course, navigating through the nuances of marketing and promotion for Sweet Glory often disrupted my momentum and exhausted my ability to write every day.

Well, I can’t thank my readers enough for spurring me onward with Jana and company and for hanging in there all of this time. They gifted me a thrilling journey in living and breathing my story, and I hope they’ll enjoy the ride too! I’m especially proud of Train to Glory’s cover of which my publisher so kindly handed over the reins for me to design.

NOTE: For readers of Sweet Glory, you might find Train to Glory’s excerpt below (from the 3rd & 4th pages of Chapter 3) eerily familiar to the opening scenes of SG—insofar as Jana’s in the barn with her parents when trouble comes a calling!

Excerpt:
A balmy liquid smelling of fresh milk splattered the nape of Jana’s neck. She jerked, kicking her tin pail; its contents emptied all along the wide plank floors as it rolled with a nerve-wracking clatter rivaling a volley of rifles.

Having grown to loathe loud noises, especially those that mimicked the sounds of battle, Jana plugged her ears until the racket subsided. She swiveled around on her stool to see Pa grinning and aiming a teat at her.

Pa’s merriment abated when he noted Jana’s scowl. “I didn’t mean to create chaos. I just thought you needed some nudging out of your brooding,” he said, knowing full well she’d been despairing over Keeley ever since they’d learned there were around seven hundred Union casualties at Trevilian Station.

Invisible to them from the other side of her cow, Ma called out, “Have you lost your confidence that Keeley will survive the war? From what you’ve told us of his tenacity and good sense, I just know he’ll be all right.”

“Yes, but—,” Jana stopped herself from telling them about the noose around her stomach that was tightening by the minute from her nagging intuition Keeley had run into trouble and was calling out to her for help. They’d just tell her to be patient—there’d be news from him soon. Her delay in returning to the field and failure to be there for him shattered her heart as if it had been hit by flying shards from an exploding shell. She could no longer worry about wrecking Ma and Pa’s joy over having her home; the second they finished milking, she’d tell them of her plans to leave straightaway. Too late in the day to make travel arrangements, she reluctantly fetched her bucket and returned to her stool. She’d just started milking when the drumming of a horse’s hoofs against the lane to the Brady homestead reached their ears.

Who could it possibly be? They weren’t expecting company tonight. The neighboring farmers would be too busy with their own cows right now to visit. And twelve-year-old Eddie Potts who Pa had hired to help with the morning and evening milking wasn’t expected back until after his pa’s furlough from his infantry regiment ended next week. Rising from her stool, Jana ticked off the tempo of the horse’s hoofs, which beat faster as they neared the barn—but not as fast as the anxiety beating against her temples.

Pa scrambled to the wide-open barn doors to await the arrival of their interloper.

Appearing from around the hindquarter of her Holstein, Ma wiped her hands on her apron and wisps of her hair away from her forehead, which was creased in concern.

The rider slowed his gelding, its summer coat frothy with sweat and its nostrils flared and puffing. He’d barely reined his mount to a stop when he leapt from the saddle, his boot soles kicking up dirt as they smacked the dry earth. After hitching his horse to the post outside, he strode toward Pa.

Something in his swagger struck Jana as familiar, but the heavy shadows of late-afternoon loitering just inside the barn’s threshold darkened his face, barring his identity.

Their visitor snatched his leather slouch hat from his head and began twirling it in his stumpy fingers. “Mr. Brady, Mrs. Brady,” he said, paying his respects to Ma and Pa.

To the unmistakable voice, Jana blurted out, “Leanne Perham, is that you?”

The Blurb:
On the Road Again…

Home after having escaped the gallows for spying on the Confederacy, Jana Brady returns to Virginia in search of her soldier-sweetheart, Keeley Cassidy, who is missing from battle. She finds him suffering from amnesia, and she brings him to the Brady farm to recover. Months pass and Keeley’s inability to remember their love or fall in love with Jana all over again constantly frustrates her and confuses him. To give Keeley some breathing room, Jana agrees to travel around New York speaking about her time in uniform. She hops aboard her Train to Glory with high hopes of advancing the cause for women’s suffrage and equal rights.

Jana is kidnapped, and further scare tactics beyond her release attempt to thwart her ultimate goal of speaking before the 88th state legislature. With a wealthy philanthropist funding her tour, and her cavalry comrades and Pinkerton agents watching her back, Jana determines to see her commitment through. She especially refuses to give up when it appears her absence from home is making Keeley’s heart grow fonder for her. But a real threat of assassination looms over her. Will Jana elude death again? Or, at the very least, will Keeley come around to Jana in time to reconcile their love? In her sequel to Sweet Glory, Lisa Potocar masterfully interweaves adventure, romance, and suspense into a sweeping portrayal of the women’s suffrage and equal rights movement and the courage of key figures in history.

Excerpt From The Wizard's Shield by Karen McCullough

BLURB:

A powerful wizard with a physics degree and a checkered past invents a shield to ensure he'll never again be tortured almost to death. The wizarding powers-that-be fear the repercussions of such a device and send his former girlfriend, an accomplished wizard herself, to retrieve the device or destroy it. When the shield is stolen by the magical mafia, Ilene McConnell and Michael Morgan have to set aside their differences and work together to recover it. Michael claims he needs the device as insurance against the kind of injury and injustice he suffered once before. Ilene maintains its potential to upset the delicate balance of power makes it too dangerous and that it needs to be destroyed. But none of that will matter if they can’t retrieve it before a ruthless, powerful wizard learns how to use it for his own ends.

EXCERPT:

The rush of a sudden, fierce wind outside drew Ilene to a window to watch the shrubs and palm trees flapping wildly. Sand blew over the pavement and splattered against walls and trees. Dead leaves, loose papers, and other debris danced in the air. A livid, purple-tinged darkness turned the day grotesque. Tendrils of indigo-shaded power floated along with the dark storm clouds.

A flash of lightning seared its way from sky to ground just beyond a row of houses across the street, followed closely by a crack of thunder that rattled the windows.

A man and woman hurried three small children along the boardwalk that led over the dune from the beach to the street. They toted coolers, bags, boogie boards, and buckets. The youngest trailed a towel flapping behind him in the wind. More lightning zig-zagged from sky to ground, not far away. Ilene sucked in a sharp breath.

The father looked up and flinched. Fear tightened his muscles as he dropped a cooler and turned around to snatch up the straggling toddler. His voice carried over the rushing wind. "Get to the van. Quick!"

He nodded toward a vehicle parked down the street. His wife and two older children raced on ahead.

Ilene’s hands clenched into fists. Too much energy crackled in the air. It wasn’t directed at the family, but that didn’t guarantee they wouldn’t get hurt by it. Collateral damage. Some of the more ruthless mages cared little for who else was affected by their activities.

Two flashes hit nearby, one right after the other. The child let out a frightened wail as his father, bent low over him, dashed off the wooden walkway and down the street. Even they could sense the danger building.

Ilene couldn’t trust their fate to chance. She roused her own power, feeling for charged particles in the area. Gathering them in, she rolled and pushed them into position, building a lattice of force around the family. It wouldn’t keep out the wind or the rain—she could have done that with air, too, if she’d had time—but it should keep the lightning from reaching them. For the moment, that mattered most.

Even at a distance, the rush of oppositely charged particles prickled in her brain. The growing polarization signaled an impending strike.

What formed out there made her gut clench in fear. It was so close to the father and child the hair on their bodies must have been standing on end. The man looked around wildly, searching for shelter. The panic in his eyes radiated across the fifty feet or so that separated them.

Would her barrier be enough to protect them? The ground charge was forming so close it could jump right through it if she’d left even a small opening. Ilene reached out toward the building charge differential. Playing with lightning was tricky business. Choosing her positions carefully, she pushed in various weak spots to move the polarizing field.

It sucked a lot of energy out of her to divert its course. Her ribs and head ached as she herded protons in a subatomic cattle drive to get the charge well away from the family. Those minuscule bits of potential energy were every bit as ornery and uncooperative as cows were reputed to be.

Even as the bolt formed, she didn’t know if she’d succeeded. Her breath stopped in her throat for a long, long moment as she waited.

The streak of lightning followed the diverted path to the beach, a safe distance away.

The man ran to the van, getting there just moments behind his wife and older children. He pushed the toddler into the back seat and ran around to the other side, while his wife slammed the rear door and got into the front. Ilene didn’t let out the breath she held until they were all safely inside the vehicle. She released the protective field. The van’s headlights flicked on and moments later it chugged off down the street.

More lightning singed the sky. An inflatable ring rolled down the street like a runaway tire. Ilene shuddered, though it wasn’t entirely the weather that set it off. The storm was a natural thing, but someone—a powerful wizard—was using it.

Using it to attack. The island or the house or its occupants. Brilliant, livid streaks of orange and red mixed with violet and deep blue swirls riding with the clouds. The smells of ammonia and ozone and peppers burned her nostrils.

Lightning flashed brighter and closer. Dangerously closer.

The grumble of thunder grew almost constant. The rushing downpour of rain added to the chaos and noise. Driven by the wind to blow almost horizontally, it splattered against the window in big drops that spread out, then slid down the glass like groping hands trying to claw their way in.

Something was out there. The swirls of lividly hued power grew deeper and more intense. It rode on the storm in frightening concentrations. Why here, though?
