Get Hooked On Stone of Heaven with #MFRWHooks, #MFRWauthor

Book Hooks is a fun way to find out more about my books and new authors listed below.

Today I'm baiting the hook for Stone of Heaven.

In the short hand of Hollywood you could say it's Romancing The Stone meets Indiana Jones.

Set in the mystical and hot Yucatan, Stone of Heaven started out as a screenplay and won the attention of several producers, one of whom was told to buy by his female assistant.  She loved it because it has strong central female characters.  WOOT.  Alas, the film has yet to be made, but I loved the story so much I wrote the book.

Here is a snippet, their first real kiss. The setting is a raging river, Tori Carswell has just rescued Reid Hunter.

Touching his face, she ran a finger around his lips until he opened them and his mouth took her finger, his tongue caressing it, sending a hot arrow of pure need straight to her belly.
And she was going to warm him up.
He settled against her, molding his body to her contours as his mouth captured her lips in a kiss so soft, so gentle it stole her breath.
Her hand crept up to his head, pulling him closer to deepen the kiss. One part of her dimly realized she felt close-cropped hair, not hat, but then the primal instinct to celebrate their defeat of death overtook all her senses.
Canting one leg over his hips, she felt his male response to her kisses, and heady feminine power filled her. A new and decidedly wicked power.

Book Trailer Reveal for Stone of Heaven

I'm very excited to post my latest book trailer for the Romantic Adventure, Stone of Heaven, Book 1 in the Carswell Adventure Series.

I had wonderful help from Robert Gosnell. I gotta tell you, I think the narrative of a short trailer is extremely hard to find, and he nailed it.  I guess all those years as a professional screenwriter helped. Me, I struggled with the narrative because I was too darn close to the story.

So here it is. I hope you enjoy.

Last Friday Recipe of the Month Is The Easiest French Market Chicken Dinner You'll Ever Make ~ Really

Gary saw this show on Food Network where Ina Garten was talking about Paris and food, and how she would often walk down a street and see rotisseries filled with plump chickens. Nestled below were potatoes that absorb all the drippings...are you salivating yet?

So she came up with a simple recipe. We've adapted it and made it even simpler, same results.

3 Ingredients.  THREE!!

~Rotisserie Chicken (we get Costco's)
~A loaf of Artisan bread (we get Costco's Olive Oil and Rosemary)
~Chicken broth.

Put the chicken in a pan or baking dish, and add chicken broth, we use about 16oz.

Cover with foil and put in warm oven or warming drawer.  You're not cooking the chicken you're just blending flavors.  And if you don't have time, just warm the rotisserie juices with the chicken broth.

Cut up the bread into cubes.  Bigger than stuffing size. At least 1/2". We cut them 3/4 to 1".

Place the bread on a platter.

Cut up chicken,

Pour on broth and serve.  The bread absorbs the broth and it's heavenly.  Really.

Serve with a crisp salad, like Caesar.

Simple and delish, even gourmet.

Here is a short excerpt from Stone of Heaven, Book One in the Carswell Adventure Series.

Book Two in the series is Viking Gold and is scheduled to publish late 2014.

Both are Romantic Adventure stories, filled with danger, treasure, suspense and of course...love.

AND I have a trailer for Stone of Heaven that will be out in a few days.  Stay tuned for the post.

Short Excerpt:
Deep in the Yucatan jungle . . .
Siesta forgotten, Jacinto pushed the broad leaf aside and saw several blue pebbles twinkling in the sunlight.
Scooping them into his palm, awed that they glowed so brightly, he was certain they must be worth much. He carefully pushed the pebbles deep into the pocket of his pants, making sure they were safe, then scrabbled in the sodden underbelly of the rainforest for more.
As he dug deeper into the mud, a sting crossed his palm. He jerked back his hand, fearful an asp had bitten him. But a gash, not bite holes, bled through the mud covering his palm. Relieved, he carefully started to dig deeper.
Soon the broken edge of a thick blue stone poked above the mud.
Excited that it had to be more valuable than the pebbles and forgetting caution, Jacinto thrust his hand deep into the muck, folding his fingers around the object, holding tight despite the sharp edge slicing deeper into his palm.
Freeing the egg-sized piece, he wiped his prize on his shirt and stared with awe at the intricately carved corner, broken off something he couldn't imagine.

Book Signing Fun and Lessons Learned

I was part of a group book signing at Barnes & Noble in Loveland CO, Nov 30th.  My first ever. I had a blast and even sold books.

I learned a couple of interesting lessons and I was totally broken-in by being asked the dreaded question; "Can you tell me where the bathroom is?"

Lesson #1.  Romance, oddly, doesn't appeal to everyone:)  And while my books have romance in them, I turned off a couple of people by stating they were "romances." Now I'm going for Adventure with Romantic Elements, or A Christmas Story with Romantic Elements, hoping that by saying that, it will continue the conversation.

Lesson #2.  I knew this, but got to put it in action.  Don't sit behind your table all the time.  Stand and greet people. Some will drop their gaze to avoid a conversation, but saying hi is better than not saying anything. Engage, you never know where it will take you.

Pictures from the signing.

Just about to get in the groove.  Really the only time I sat.

My set-up. Notice the candy :) and the sign-up book.
Looks serious.  Richard Lawrence and me.

Stone Of Heaven Excerpts and More Images That Inspired The Story

EXCERPT 1:
Spitting on the carving and rubbing it with his thumb, he cleared off most of the muddy haze and held his treasure up to the sun, playing it back and forth in the strong light. The blue stone's glow was mesmerizing, seeming as if the sun itself were trapped inside. "¡Madre de Dios!"

EXCERPT 2:

Little took Reid by surprise, but the woman standing in front of him did the trick. He pushed back his hat and crossed his arms, giving himself a second to think.
"Victoria Carswell, as I live and breathe, you actually exist." Leaning back against the plane's door, he scanned her from head to toe, taking his time, enjoying the view.
She really was the identical twin of Abby. A fraction taller, a bit thinner, her hair a bit longer. His gaze was drawn to her mouth as she licked her lips, completely unaware of the invitation she offered even as her gray eyes with those mysterious ebony flecks held a look of suspicion and wariness. Yet they didn't hold the razor-sharp glint Abby's now often held.
And when Tori blinked, for that split second following, she revealed a hint of melancholy buried deep in her soft gray gaze.
His gaze narrowed on the antique butterfly sword she held. "Nice sword. Who were you expecting?"
"Not you." She moved back a step and brushed against the papers on the desk.
All Reid's other thoughts fled when a glimmer of blue peeked out from beneath the edge of one of the stacks of paper.
Was it the jade? Was it what the boy Jacinto had shown Abby? Could it be his luck had finally turned?
He took a step toward her, and she moved back farther. Another step forward by him and a step backward for her, almost like a tango, until she was pinned against the desk. Right where he wanted her, the confusion in her eyes exactly what he wanted her to feel. He leaned toward her, focusing on her mouth while he palmed and pocketed the jade.
Euphoria swept through him, and he wanted to dance, pump his fists and crow at the top of his voice. This was the drug of treasure hunters. It didn't matter at the moment that he hadn't found it first, it mattered only that he was holding it. The jade was real and he had a piece of it.
He even wanted that kiss he'd feigned to Tori, wanting to wipe that confusion off her face and replace it with satisfaction.
Instead of doing any of what he wanted, he straightened. "Where's Abby?" he asked, his voice normal, his pulse still hammering.
"You're following her, you should know. Have you seen Dr. Sanchez?"
"No, I assume he's in his dusty museum. And by the way, I got here first, I never follow," he said, leaning next to her against the desk, amused as she shifted away from him.
Wait, what was that she said? "Whoa, back up a bit. Why would you think Sanchez is here?"
"Because Lupe told me he was heading for Chuca. I thought the plane out there might have been his."
"It's not, it's mine. You met Lupe?"
"She was at the airport to pick me up."
"And where is she now?"
Victoria shrugged.
Stunned, Reid realized what she'd said. "Wait, you're telling me you flew down here? Christ, Abby must be in some trouble for you to get on an airplane."

See What Inspired Stone of Heaven

My husband found an article about a blue jade roadway in Guatemala uncovered by Hurricane Mitch in the 90's.  That article immediately sparked a flame and I began noodling with a script called King Maker.  At that time I was writing screenplays more than writing for novels as it seemed my career was moving in that direction.

The title King Maker wasn't working for me.  It sounded like a European tale. I knew Jade was often called the Stone of Heaven, but I thought was only its Asian name.  Apparently I was wrong about that. Stone of Heaven is jade, though usually green, and was mined, carved and revered by unrelated ancient societies in both Asia and Mesoamerica.

So I  now had a title that changed my perception about the story and I delved deeply into Maya Mythology and decided to visit the archeological site of Tulum in the Yucatan while we were on a cruise.

Here are a few of the pictures I took.

El Castillo "The Castle" ruin at Tulum.

It wasn't simply the ruins were massive, it was the fact it was the only Mayan ruin situated on the coast of the Caribbean Sea.

This is the back side of El Castillo and
plays a very important part in the novel.

This view is from the pathway behind El Castillo and
you can see the ocean below, also an important part of the story.
It was over 90 degrees, but the importance of this photo
is not super hot me :) but the beach behind me that is the cove
below and slightly to the north of El Castillo.

This is a carving from the temple of the frescos,
can you make out the terrifying face of the god?

This is the same face on a front view of the carving,
can you make out the features?

More pictures and an excerpt to come on Friday.

Does this make you want to delve into Stone of Heaven, Book One of the Carswell Adventure Series?  I hope so, it was magical for me.

ciao
