Does FOMO Rule Your Writing Life?

The Fear Of Missing Out (FOMO) is a real thing. Think about it.

You get an email about a new class that ticks some of your boxes.

You hear a friend talk about some new tool to help with writing and you may be intrigued and just need to try it as well.

Your mailbox is inundated with offers of out-of-town conferences, workshops, and retreats! Not only is the location utterly fantastic, but the programs also sound so amazing, and you just know you’ll come back a better writer.

Shiny new toys and new experiences beckon so what do you do, miss out on them?

I’m betting no.

Because we want to find that magic bullet, the fun, best, new shiny thing to make us better writers. Some new method that will make it easier for us to write. Sell, promote, be famous … etc.

Guilty admission here. I’ve spent $$$$ on classes all promising me so much. Did I want to miss anything that could help me? Heck no.

I’ve been a multiple victim of FOMO 😊

This doesn’t mean those classes et al aren’t worth it. But there are things to think about before succumbing to FOMO.

Another guilty admission, most of those classes I bought and downloaded onto my computer drive are still sitting there. Why? Because I spend a lot of time writing and then I have a life. And anyone will tell you I’m not lazy and I love challenges. But there are only 24 hours in a day, including sleep.

I knew it was going to be a stretch to get to them done with my schedule, but still I bought them because I was sure I’d be missing a great strategic … something. I started a few of them and realized I was way in over my head time wise. Thus, I wasn’t concentrating.

And worse, even my interest had waned. Maybe because the next new shiny FOMO landed in my In-Box.

WAIT, I’m not dissing courses, classes, webinars, etc. Not. At. All. There are a lot of amazing courses out there. A lot of them.

But before you pull the trigger, think about why you’re paying your hard-earned money and scheduling valuable time for this class or shiny new gadget or retreat. (I love gadgets BTW. After all my nick name is Techno Squirrel)

Because these days the ticking clock of “the sign up before it’s gone” is in front of us all the time and FOMO takes front seat.

Hey, it’s great marketing. Worked on me and I’m, um, tight with my $$$$. And here’s the thing. I regret some of my purchases.

Not that I made them, (although sometimes the classes were a dud) but I made them when I wasn’t ready to focus on what I bought them for.

Meaning I got hooked by the salesmanship and the FOMO.

Will I go back and study? Some of them, yes. And if you’re interested, I’ll tell which I think are the most important to me. Go ahead and comment below 😊

Just know FOMO is real.

Take a step back and look at your life, how busy it may already be and then take a deeper breath and decide if you’re jumping because you really need this now and are ready to dig in or if it’s simply because everyone is on some bandwagon and you’re afraid of FOMO.

It’s real. But it can be conquered. Even turning FOMO into JOMO (joy of missing out).

This is AWESOME.” / “This month has truly changed the way I think about writing. I wish I’d taken Plotting Via Motivation before giving up on my earlier novels.” / “Now that I look back in the notebook where I wrote all my homework, I realize I’ve got my book right here.”

This class offers tools for shaping basic personalities into heroic, appealing characters who'll naturally wind up in conflict. Explore the various types, archetypes and subtypes -- ideal for creating clashes between genuinely likable people -- and see which will offer the best opportunities for conflict that’s built in right from the start.

Online: WRITING A SERIES...
(June 5-16) s in c guppies dot wild apricot dot org (Guppy members only
)

  • It’s one thing to write a stand-alone novel. It’s another to write a sequel, a trilogy, a box set or an open-ended series that’ll continue for as long as you want. While great storytelling is great storytelling no matter the format, there are techniques to keep in mind when writing a series that will not only keep your readers on board through every story, but keep you from burning out while they’re still waiting for more.

Online: HOW TO WRITE YOUR FIRST (OR 45th) SYNOPSIS
(June 19-30) groups.io/g/Synopsis

  • If you’ve ever had trouble writing a synopsis, here’s a hint: pretend you’re writing an ad. An advertising copywriter for 25 years, Laurie was amazed to discover that the same skills which helped her sell bikes, bouquets and birdbaths also helped her sell books. Discover how to use those Mad Men techniques to interest “consumers” (whether they’re agents, editors, reviewers, or whoever) in your product.

Zoom: MAKING REJECTION WORK FOR YOU
(July 1, 4 pm Eastern) Women’s Fiction Writers Assn

  • Turning rejection into a profitable experience, personally and professionally.

July is always a no-class month, which sounds a bit rowdy...hmm. :)

Blog: EDGE OF THEIR SEATS
(July 28) writers in the storm blogspot

  • How long should you keep readers in suspense? When should it rise and fall?

Online: TICK...TICK...BUILDING TENSION
(August 7-18) groups.io/g/Tension

  • The ticking clock. The infamous day. The elusive stranger. The sizzling glance. The unbreakable promise. The haunting memory. The forbidden love. Tension is what keeps readers awake far too late at night, and what makes them rave about your book even before they reach the final page. How do you create that kind of tension? Think of a story you’ve already started writing, or are just beginning to plan, and see how to build...build...build....

Online: THE HERO’S JOURNEY, FOR HEROINES
(Sept. 4-29) writeruniv.com/classes/journey-for-heroines/

  • Christopher Vogler identified 12 steps for daredevil heroes who explore the outside world and return with the elixir. But a character whose emotional journey leads to flowering change instead of physical adventure, as described in Kim Hudson’s 13 steps, will embark on a journey filled with other -- more internal -- challenges. For writers whose heroine faces her own less traveled road to discovery, this class offers a fascinating map.

Online: GROWING YOUR HEROINE
(Oct. 2-13) writeruniv.com/classes/growing-your-heroine/

  • This limited-enrollment master class picks up where September’s ends, focusing on the heroine’s journey through everything she needs to overcome from beginning to end. Starting with a “stick figure” and moving to your work in progress, chart the route she’ll use for transcending her weak points -- as well as those of people she cares about -- while avoiding both the false triumph and false disaster of her own story.

Blog: FORWARD, BACK, FORWARD, BACK
(October 30) writers in the storm blogspot

  • No reader wants a perfectly smooth ride, but how many roadblocks are okay?

Online: HIS PERSONALITY LADDER
(Nov. 6-17) groups.io/g/Ladder

  • Track your hero’s arc through the seven core steps he’ll need to climb during his journey from a not-yet-heroic character to one who’s fully earned his victory by the end. Of course, the heroine has her ownladder to climb, often in parallel stages...until the finale, when they reach their ultimate triumph. (There’s even a ladder for the villain, although he seldom makes it to the top.)

Laurie Schnebly Campbell published half a dozen romances with Harlequin, including one that beat out Nora Roberts for “Best Special Edition of the Year,” before discovering the only thing she loves more than writing is working with other writers. So she started giving workshops every month, online and in-person, and now has a special area on her bookshelf full of books with acknowledgments from authors who’ve loved her classes.

The Big Three For Backing Up Your Computer Work

A new year is here, and there is no better time to start new computer backup practices to save your hard work.

And if you've been hanging around this blog you know I'm super focused redunant backups systems. Why? Because failures do happen.

So what are my Big Three backup solutions?

LOCAL

EDH's

OFF SITE

Image of Big 3 in red box

1) Local means backing up in backup software on your computer.  However, if you have a hard drive (HD) crash or system failure, you may be out of luck.

2) EHD's give you the security of having another source of your backup, and make sure you store them safely. However, EHD's and flash drives can fail, or you can mistakenly erase them. Gulp. Nevertheless I use them as a second prong of my backup stategy.

(*click on any image to take you to Amazon)

And sadly the two systems above are useless if you have a fire or other catastrophe or again, if they fail on you. However they are neccessary to save work in progress and are a great secondary precaution

And yep, I hear you. Safety deposit box, L.A.! Sure you can store your EHD in a safety deposit box or a fireproof safe, rated with a high burn time. And that's not a bad idea, but what if you have to drive to the bank ... will you do it all the time? And can you get a safe with a high burn time?

Another thought is to have two sets that you rotate to the SDB, but again will you go?

3)

The third prong in my backup strategy is to use off-site backup. And my choice for this is BackBlaze.  I've used them for years and trust them. If you need a single file or your entire drive, it's there for you.

(*I may earn a small comission if you sign up, but it's at no cost to you)

Or a cloud storage like DropBox.

(if you click the link I get some free storage and so do you! So it's totally a win/win. Surprise, right?)

I get that some of you are very uncomfortable with off site storage because of hacking. I'm not in the business of guarteening something won't be hacked, so do your research and feel comfortable with what you choose.

As I said I use BackBlaze for all my hard drives, including my EDH's. And I use DropBox to make sure I can easily get to my work in progress if for some reason I'm offline. Check out their resources, I had to dig a bit, but found out I can have both online and local storage for those documents that I have to work on every day.

And I use EDH's for daily redundancy.

What ever you choose, do it now and be more at peace that you've done the best you can to protect your work.

Happy New Year to all of you.
Find joy and peace where you can and revel in those moments💓

Author Spotlight ~ Debut Author Gretchen A. Carlson's "More Than Grit" Novel

Please welcome debut author Gretchen A. Carlson.
She won't mention that she's already a #1 Best Seller, but I will :)

Thank you, L.A., for inviting me to your porch with your friends and readers. With a deep breath, I’ll jump in with two quiet confessions.

First, I might be the oldest author to share a debut book here… but I’m learning to live with a young heart. I used to see the glass half empty rather than half full. When the grit of life darkened my heart, I often escaped into books, especially historical fiction. Characters fueled my courage and inspired me.

My grandma was in her eighties when she told me a story kept secret for decades. That was thirty years ago, but today More Than Grit is available on Amazon. It’s a book about broken lives and deep friendships as the shadows of World War II lengthened. More importantly, it’s about forgiveness and grace. It’s a story for hearts that yearn to live young.

My second confession? I cried. No, I sobbed when I typed the last paragraph of the book. I realized no matter the twists and turns or disappointments of life, nothing can separate us from God’s love.

My prayer is that each of you sweet friends and readers will not stumble through life’s hurts and jagged edges with an old heart. Instead, let hope and grace carry you. This is why I write.

A bit more about the story and why I wrote it. The official genre is Middle Grade, although readers of all ages have contacted me that they enjoyed the book. I decided to target fourth through eighth graders for two reasons. First, that’s when books began to shape me. My main character is a spunky twelve-year old girl, and through her I want to inspire teens that their lives have impact. They can make a difference in their homes, school, and community. Secondly, I’ve been concerned with content trends in middle grade and young adult novels.

Thank you for listening to tidbits of my story, and thank you again, L.A. for connecting friends and books.

Blessings!

Gretchen A. Carlson

Excerpt:

I rolled up my shirt sleeves even though Mother warned me not to sunburn my scars. Were the bird-pecked apples worth the risk?

But winter’s hunger was approaching. I grabbed two apples and reached for more. Sweat ran under my ponytail, down my neck and back.

Tossing apples onto my ragged quilt spread below, I scanned the yard. My breath caught. Dewey Dog was gone. Only the chickens’ throaty cackles interrupted the quiet.

Don’t panic. It must be safe since he wandered off.

With my skinny legs wrapped tight around a limb, I inched higher.

“Git down, ya thief.” A raspy voice cut the silence, and a long shadow stepped from behind a shed, a rotting rectangle ready to collapse. A brown stream of spit hit the ground with a dusty splat. “Stealin’ my apples.”

Old Man lifted the barrel of a shotgun. I froze.

“Girlie. Ya hear me?” Old Man’s shotgun edged closer, and my heart skittered to a stop.

“I heard you.” I swallowed hard and chucked another apple onto the quilt. “And I’m not Girlie. My name … is … Sissy Grumme.” I turned my head, expecting a reaction to my ugly melted cheek.

He raised the gun.

I stared down the end of the barrel.

“Last time. Git down.” Old Man spat and sniggered, “Girlie.”

My heart battered hard against my chest. Don’t. Call. Me. Names.

I picked an apple and threw it at Old Man’s feet. Rotten mush splattered his work boots, and he snarled. I hugged a branch with both arms and dropped to the ground. As I landed, there was the sharp crack of a shell sliding into a gun chamber followed by Dewey Dog’s deep growl. Behind Old Man stood my guard—his fur bristled. Old Man pressed the shotgun into his shoulder and spun around.

“No!” I rushed toward them.

Blurb:

When do secrets become lies? When is grit not enough?

Scarred by burns from a kerosene lantern, twelve-year old Sissy knows electricity is more than her farm family’s dream. It’s vital. She also knows they can’t afford the required deposit to be connected to electric lines, so she wrangles a secret deal to help her parents. As she faces danger and sacrifices to support her family, Sissy’s best efforts fail. She’s blind to what she needs most, and when she tells her secrets, she fears it’s too late.

Set in Kansas farmland, More than Grit is an unforgettable story of determination to succeed against all odds that will appeal to middle-grade and teen readers, their parents, and anyone who roots for the underdog.

Award winning author Gretchen A. Carlson fills her characters with grit and grace as she shares the story her grandmother kept secret.

Author Spotlight & New Release, Don't Miss K.V. Fischer!

I'm pleased to bring you K.V. Fischer's latest release
Search Beyond Lies

This novel was inspired by the real-life search for a graduate student who was a special operations army veteran and went missing on Mount Meeker. What I witnessed was the impact two dedicated, persistent, loyal friends (one of whom is my son) could make that would bring strangers together in a dangerous search and rescue mission.

It was a story that just had to be written, and as a novelist, I had the opportunity to create an action-packed suspense thriller with a happy ending. It was also a story that spawned a new series for me — the Search & Recovery International Series.

Please visit my website, www.KVFischer.com to find out more about the crisis, the bond of friendship and how lives changed forever, not just for me, but for all those who helped in the search.

Blurb:

A missing scientist, a top-secret project, a ticking clock and no clues. Or are there?

When grad student James Frankel’s best friend and mentor goes missing, James wonders if his disappearance is related to his friend’s top-secret project. A selfie summiting a Colorado mountain makes everyone believe he’s lost there. But is he?

As a former Army Ranger, Charlie Sommers garnered the reputation of having the highest search and rescue success rate, but she’s plagued by the one she left behind. Now she’s on the verge of an exciting new beginning as a part of Search & Recovery International where her secrets are safe. There’s only one problem: the new assignment will take her back to Colorado and the loss that still haunts her. Can she open herself to the possibility of another failure?

Desperate to find his friend, James knows only Charlie can help him. But how can he trust a woman who’s keeping secrets?

The clock is ticking down. With their livesand their heartsat risk, Charlie and James join forces in an attempt to save the scientist and the world from catastrophe while finding the truth beyond lies in this action-packed thriller.

If you like high stakes, heart pounding action with a spark of romance, you won’t want to miss Search Beyond Lies, Book One in the Search & Recovery International Series.

Excerpt:

No!

James Frankel flung the covers aside and bolted to his feet, desperate to escape the fear that flooded his senses.

It’s only a dream. A nightmare. Nothing more. Brett is safe. He’ll be there.

Though he knew better than to drink caffeine in the middle of the night, he went into the kitchen to put on a pot of coffee. There was no chance he’d get back to sleep, not when the dream was still so fresh. While he went through the motions, he tried hard to remember the disturbing details of his nightmare. He didn’t normally have nightmares. Why now? Surely the stress of the coming day hadn’t triggered it. Thanks to Brett, he was prepared for his defense. And the dream itself had nothing to do with facing a group of experts determined to poke holes in his dissertation.

James stared at the dripping pot, trying to make sense of what had frightened him. For there was no doubt about it. He had been frightened. Terrified. Only unattached fragments came to mind.

The sense of danger.

Brett’s fear.

Brett’s voice echoing in the dark. “Lies.”

What about the lies? Think, James!

Brett’s whispered “Don’t believe the lies” reverberated in his mind.

What does it mean? Why so ominous? As the last drop landed in the pot, James shook his head, then poured himself a cup of coffee, mechanically adding the cream. Think!

More fragments.

Iron bars. A prison. The details were too vague to identify. James closed his eyes, took a deep breath, and let it out slowly.

It was only a nightmare. Brett will be there.

* * *

Vultures circled.

Not again.

Charlie Sommer studied the birds of prey as dread pooled in her stomach. This was why she was leaving. No matter what anyone said, no matter how many successful rescues she had, she couldn’t handle another summer like the last one. And even though her brain told her the vultures might be searching for an animal, her heart couldn’t ignore the other possibilities.

She stepped up her pace. Although the sun poked through the limbs of the high alpine trees as she headed toward the summit of Mount Beacon, the weather could change in a heartbeat in the mountains. Please let this Fourth of July have a happy ending. Please let it be a new beginning. Please, please, no more failures.

Charlie trekked toward the area where the vultures circled. The clean fragrance of rain carried down the mountain—a hint of something foreboding looming on the horizon. She pulled out her watch. Ten o’clock in the morning. It would take another hour to reach the area. Would she have time to beat the rain?

Side-stepping the scattered evidence of last week’s storm, she pushed on. She was there because a hiker reported that vultures were spotted in her assigned quadrant. This would be her last time doing this, her last day as an Alpine Ranger in Elk Horn National Park, her last climb up the trail that held the most painful memories of her life. It was time for a change. She had been warned to hold off on life-changing decisions for one year. That year was up. She trudged on.
